SBCC’s Monday Madness Jazz Orchestra is back at the SOhO for their second performance of the year! This time they have Santa Barbara native Adolfo Acosta from Tower of Power joining them for an incredible show.
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Adolfo Acosta began playing the trumpet at the age of 10 at Monroe Elementary School. A few years later while at La Cumbre Junior High, he heard the school’s jazz band play at an assembly and it was bitten by the music bug. After high school, he attended Santa Barbara City College in 1988 where he had the opportunity to play with the first incarnation of Monday Madness as well as many other of the school’s ensembles. In 1992, Adolfo left home to attend the University of North Texas and played lead trumpet in their flagship ensemble "The One O'clock Lab Band". In 1998 Adolfo received the call to go on the road and play with his childhood hero: Maynard Ferguson. After touring with Ferguson for two years, Adolfo was chosen to sub on a summer tour with the iconic soul band, Tower of Power, which led to him becoming a full time member. Twenty two years later, he is still a member of one of the busiest touring bands in the business, touring the world countless times, and recording with the most popular musical artists in the world.
Santa Barbara City College has been the home of the Monday Madness Jazz Orchestra since its formation by instructor Dr. Charles Wood in 1988. The band celebrates the instrumental jazz music of the greats like Count Basie, Thad Jones, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson & Buddy Rich, as well as modern groups like The WDR Big Band, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Airmen of Note, The Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, and the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band. The band is currently led by saxophonist Andrew Martinez. Band members consist of local professionals and music educators.
